Greener Ethiopia is a non-profit, non-politicalorganization, registered in February 2010 GC (registration no. 1336) according to the new country regulation. GE was founded in 2002 GC by a private group of individuals deeply concerned about the deforestation and resulting poverty of their country. The 38% forest cover that once existed in Ethiopia was in recent years reduced to less than 3%, leading to devastating effects on the health and wealth of Ethiopians. GE is firmly committed to reversing this problem.
Tree planting, seed distribution, and specialist training, are the heart of Greener Ethiopia's initiative.
Working in partnership with individual volunteers, local communities, farming co-operatives, women's associations, and authorities at both regional and national level, over the last 8 years, Greener Ethiopia has planted and distributed around 20 million trees.
It aims to achieve a further 100 million in the next 5 years.
There is no doubt that Greener Ethiopia is changing the rural face of Ethiopia for the better.
New trees and the outstanding commitment of the many communities who help to plant them, are an unstoppable force for good.
As Greener Ethiopia grows from strength to strength, it has been joined by Ethiopians from every ethnic group, religion, and profession - all of whom have a stake in their country's future.
A unique initiative is transforming the lives of thousands and playing an equally significant role in challenging climate change.
If the people of a developing country can change their future for the better, then surely so can everyone.
